Character Information
Name: Andrew ‘Ender’ Wiggin
Canon Origin/Series: Ender’s Game
School Year: 2nd year
Gender: Male
Age: 12
Out of school living location: Perth, Scotland
Blood status: Muggleborn
Personality:
- Ender is a boy who was thrust into an adult world too quickly. Even before he was born, the world already had his future neatly in place: He was to be the commander of the Third Invasion. He was the one who was going to lead the Earth to victory against the Formics, an alien race that is more commonly known in his canon as ‘Buggers’.
But it wasn’t always supposed to be that way. The government specifically wanted to make a commander out of one of the Wiggin children. The first one, Peter, is too vicious, and ‘has the soul of a jackal’ according to the book. The second one, Valentine, was too empathetic, too kind. So the government decided to allow the parents to have a third child, which is looked down upon in the futuristic version of Earth, in hopes that the kid would be right between Peter and Valentine. And that is Ender’s true purpose. From the beginning, he wasn’t someone who was absolutely desired, but a necessity, for the army and the human race itself. And not only did they simply need him, they needed him quickly.
But to be a top notch commander demands that he should start training young. In school, he was constantly bullied because of his status as a Third, and at home his brother made it no different. The lack of adult intervention in his life allowed Ender to learn a sense of self-sufficiency. He learned that no one was going to help him and that if he wanted to get somewhere he had to do it by himself. Once the monitor went off, it was as if the umbilical cord from those watching over him was cut. And he realized then that he had to fend for himself if he wanted to get rid of the bullies at school. So he pummeled the leader to the ground. And just to make sure that he wasn’t bullied again? He kicked him again, and again, just to prove a point to the rest of the students. He has to beat all the odds that the adults give him in school; being isolated, youngest commander, training an army in under two weeks, etc. all without help from anyone else. He knows how to solve his own problems.
Another thing going for Ender is how incredibly smart he is. It seems to run in the family, but it is his way of thinking that catches the attention of the IF. He is an incredibly quick learner, having learned arithmetic by the time he was five and taking very little time to learn the basics of fighting in zero gravity. His skills also allow him to make new plans of attack, devise strategies that have never been used before with the other commanders. He is observant, taking what others do, twisting it and making it into something better. It’s these skills that allow him to move through Battle and Command School quickly, much more than the rest (soldiers usually enter Command School by the time they’re 16. He’s 11). Not only that, but he’s incredibly stubborn. He’ll exhaust every option that he has against an opponent before giving up. And even then, he might try a few more times. He always wants to find out something, and hates being in the dark, even when it’s about his own emotions.
But what defines Ender is his empathy. While not being as empathic and as compassionate as his sister, his gift and curse is the ability to understand others. Combined with his observance, it’s what allows him to learn from others, to understand his enemy. By observing them, he is able to get close to them and think like them to the point that he says that ‘he loves them’. Ender thinks so much like them, that he is able to expose all their weak points and use it for his benefit. And while it allows him to win all the battles, he hates it as well. He hates it because it means that he can’t get close to anyone without hurting them in the worst way possible. The fact that he was purposely isolated by the teachers in Battle School didn’t help either. He was already isolated from his classmates before being raised as a soldier. Most disliked him because he was smarter than the others and because he was a Third. And yet, he still seeks for acceptance, in some way or form. He tells Valentine that he wishes not to best Peter, but to get him to love him. And he hated the two times that he got into fights, even if he won both of them. He doesn’t like to hurt others, even though he believes that it’s what he does best.
But it’s also his empathy that makes it so easy for others to manipulate him. The IF use his love for Valentine to make him join Battle School, also playing on the fact that his parents would most likely not miss him. They hurt him, and purposely isolate him so that he can grow into their own perfect weapon. In Command School, he is made to believe that he is playing games against simulations of the Fornic Army, when in truth he was leading the IF fleets against a real Third Invasion against the armies. He was manipulated to destroy their planet. And he hates himself for it.
Even so, what Ender seems to be aware of is how different everyone is from a normal child. He mentions it several times, how everyone in Battle School are nothing like children, other than being small. He was raised to be an adult in a boy’s body, to make decisions that could make or end a world. But what he really wanted all that time was a normal life. Even though it’s nearly impossible for him, all Ender wants most is to escape from his life as a soldier.
Canon Background:
Background (AU!Canon; HP):
- paranormalEnder was the third, and last child of his family, but from the beginning, everyone in the neighborhood knew that he was stranger than the other two Wiggins. Until the day he left for Hogwarts, he was bulled by his classmates and his brother alike. After all, he was the smallest in his class, one of the smartest, and didn’t talk much in general; a perfect target. But it wasn’t as if he couldn’t hold his own ground. By the time he left, Ender already had a few won fights under his belt. His parents were somewhat absent in his life, and the teachers for some reason refused to help him, which forced him to grow up under the wing of his kind sister, Valentine.
Because of the lack of help from adults, Ender had to grow up quickly, to defend himself on his own. Nevertheless, he was still a child at heart, and sometimes preferred to play games with his sister or alone. The neighborhood children never invited them, not after that incident when he set a car on fire on accident. And if he could avoid it, then his brother Peter was never an option, he was too rough, and on purpose. He learned from a young age that if he wanted to get anything done, he’d have to do it himself.
And when Ender received his letter to Hogwarts, he was more surprised about there being actual wizards than the fact that he was one himself. His brother mocked him, but his parents and his sister were excited. At first, Ender didn’t want to leave Valentine or his parents, but decided to go anyways, thinking that maybe, finally, he could find people like him. He could leave his old life behind and forget about the bullies at school and Peter at home.
His first year at Hogwarts was…interesting to say the least. Socializing hadn’t been easy for Ender, which was a total contrast to the little difficulty that he had in classes. When he had time (which was often) he would look ahead in his books, teaching himself as much as he could, and perfecting techniques during class. He took an interest in Defense Against the Dark Arts and Transfiguration, where he excelled in, while in other classes he just put an average effort (except in Charms, where he would put very little, if any). Whenever Ender wasn’t sticking his nose in a book or practicing what he learned in class, he would most likely go outside to watch the Quidditch teams practice. He would learn the game from the ground and make up his own strategies in his head (though never telling anyone). Back home, Ender wasn’t very big on sports, but the idea to be flying on a broom and catching or hitting balls in the air was incredibly exciting for him.
But it wasn’t all that well for him. On the way back from school in the train, a third year student challenged him to a fight. Not wanting to risk his reputation and be known as a coward, Ender accepted the challenge. The fight didn’t last long, and he ended up with a few bruises. The opponent ended up unconscious and with a concussion later on. By the time he began his second year, he hoped that people didn’t remember it, or at least didn’t bother him about it. apptivity
How would your character fit in to each House?
Gryffindor:
- Ender is incredibly brave. At 12 years old, he was the commander of a fleet of space ships and led them to victory. He is just as emotional as he is logical, and because of this he’s somewhat rash. He is courageous, and ready to stick up for his team, his friends, and himself. He’s not much about the glory, other than the occasional bragging rights. Bravery? He has that in spades. He’s able to lead his army against all odds in Battle School and again during Command School. Just leaving his family when he was six, while knowing that he would most likely never see them again took guts by itself. Though he never had much chance to develop a sense of chivalry.
Hufflepuff:
- Something that defines Ender is loyalty. When he was a commander, he may have seemed very strict towards all, but he gave help to all who wanted it. He’s patient, and explains things as many times as necessary. Like his sister, he is incredibly kind and empathetic, which makes it easy for him to understand people. He only likes fighting when it’s fair, but also believes in using what is given to him to win. Ender is incredibly hard working as well, sometimes wearing himself a bit too thin, although he knows when to take a break. Work before play is probably his life motto.
Ravenclaw:
- Ender’s wit is beyond measure, and is quick to respond with sarcastic comments and jokes instead of outright insulting someone. In school, he was the smartest one in his class, having learned arithmetic by the time he was three years old. His creativity led to him making many changes in how he controlled his army, which gave them a big advantage when it came to fights. Not only that, but he is a quick learner, and even if he is one of the best in Battle and Command School, he’s not above learning from others. In fact, learning from others is how he develops his own strategies.
Slytherin:
- Resourceful might as well be Ender’s middle name. When he trained his army, he trained them to use everything around them, even themselves. He’s able to defeat an army of millions against the few thousand ships that he had, and his leadership skills led him and his team to be the best in Battle School. His cunning allowed him to think up plans very quickly and defeat opponents against all the odds that the school placed for him. He has very little true ambition though, since the path to his future was mostly laid out for him. He just did what the upper ranks told him to do.
RP Samples:
- Back to school, I guess. For those that celebrate Christmas, what did you get?
[there’s a few doodles on the journal. A sweater, and an envelope.]
My sister sent me a card from where they visited in America. I didn’t know that we had family in Greensboro. My parents bought me a sweater from there, but they still seem to think that a big, knitted tree in the middle of a bright red sweater is ‘cute’.
[he starts writing another sentence, but he decides to cross it out as quickly as possible, before anyone else could get it. It was probably something about how he actually missed the bustle of Hogwarts.]
Third Person Sample:
- Ender walked through the empty halls of Hogwarts. The holidays were soon to end, and even though he somewhat missed the hundreds of students running to and from their classes, he still enjoyed the eerie quietness. While his parents went to North Carolina to visit family, Ender stayed in school, and honestly, he didn’t mind.
No one from his family questioned him either. His sister’s letter mentioned that she missed him and their tradition of putting a piece of coal in Peter’s stocking, but that was it. His parents hadn’t even asked about it, simply sending an ugly sweater which they said that his brother had chosen with utmost care.
At the memory of the note, Ender gave a wry smile. As if his brother would care about him. He was one of the reasons why he didn’t leave Hogwarts for the holidays. That and because he didn’t like the way his parents avoided the subject of his magic. He was something strange to them, no matter how many times they would deny it. Ender still knew and understood. So he stayed in school, just to relieve his parents of the burden of having to make up excuses as to why he was going to a boarding school while his just as smart siblings weren’t.
Once he made his way up to the Common Room, he sat down in one of the chairs, opening the text book for Defense Against the Dark Arts, skipping ahead to where he was in his self-study (a few chapters ahead of the class). He might as well do something with his extra spare time, right?
